3 weeks…3 UFC events. This has been great to have this much going on here lately…and there have been exciting match-ups on every card so far. This weekend is no different as we get what Dana White has called, “The best Heavyweight match in a long time.” As usual I will give you my opinion on what’s going to happen but this week we welcome our newest contributor Craig Nelson along to add his input as well. Let’s take a look at what to expect this Saturday night in Vancouver.
Main Event: Junior Dos Santos vs. Shane Carwin
Who Will Win: Shane Carwin via TKO in Round 1
Why: This fight seems to be two giant men who are going to trade punches until one hits the mat. My opinion is that Carwin will use his wrestling background for the first time and take Dos Santos down. Once he gets him down the mystery of JDS will be seen, can he use his BJJ to put Carwin in a compromising position? I say no as Shane will ground-and-pound his way to victory.
Craig’s Pick: Carwin via KO in Round 1
Co-Main Event: Kenny Florian vs. Diego Nunes
Who Will Win: Kenny Florian via Unanimous Decision.
Why: In Florian’s featherweight debut, he faces a veteran of the WEC, and someone who is good at submissions. Unfortunately Nunes hasn’t finished anyone in almost 3 years and he has never faced anyone with the skill set of Florian. Kenny on the other hand has been in the Octagon with the elite of the lightweight division and will use his experience to grind this one out.
Craig’s Pick: Kenny Florian via UD
Demian Maia vs. Mark Munoz
Who Will Win: Maia via Unanimous Decision
Why: Maia is a brilliant BJJ fighter and will use his ground game to neutralize Munoz’s hands. Hoping this one doesn’t get too boring but I’m worried.
Craig’s Pick: Maia via submission in Round 2
Jon Olav Einemo vs. Dave Herman
Who Will Win: Herman via submission in Round 2
Why: Not much is known about these 2 UFC newcomers, but looking at their fight history Herman seems to have a knack for finishing fights. Also Einemo hasn’t fought since 2006…that will hurt him.
Craig’s Pick: Einemo via submission in Round 2
Donald Cerrone vs. Vagner Rocha
Who Will Win: Cerrone via submission in Round 3
Why: Cerrone is on his way to the top of the lightweight division and Rocha is just another notch on his belt. He will dominate this fight on his way to a rear naked choke.
Craig’s Pick: Cerrone via KO in Round 2
There you have it. Another big time fight to determine the #1 Heavyweight contender. No matter who wins the main event, there is no doubt that it will be a tough match for Velasquez this fall. Here’s hoping for another exciting UFC event and we will see you next weekend for the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.
