So you’re sad that Edgar vs. Maynard III isn’t happening. Neither are we, but what we are excited about is the rest of the card. As many as 3 of the fights could launch the winner into No. 1 contender status. While we may not be able to see the conclusion of the lightweight trilogy it will still be a satisfying night of fights.
Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs Matt Hamill-A major light heavyweight battle that will see two completely different styles employed, and the winner possibly putting himself in contention of the LHW title. Though the air may have been taken out of the proverbial balloon with Jackson’s comments of not being excited to face “The Hammer”, there is no doubt that Hamill sees a huge opportunity. Although UFC President Dana White has not claimed that the winner gets a shot at the gold, it would be hard to deny either fighter that chance with a dominant victory.
Prediction-Matt Hamill def. Quinton Jackson via Unanimous Decision
Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson-Will they stand or will they go to the ground? That is the question on the fans minds’ headed into this matchup. We have seen both fighters win by KO and by submission and they are both equal in both departments so what will they do. This is Joe Silva at his greatest. Neither fighter has a clear advantage, both are former champions, and both are on the downhill of their careers. This may be the last shot for both men and the loser may never challenge for a title again. However the winner will make a strong case for the winner of Cain vs JDS/Carwin.
Prediction-Frank Mir def Roy Nelson via TKO in Round 2
Stefan Struve vs. Travis Browne-One of these men is the future of the Heavyweight division and one will see their dreams set back a year. Which one will come out on top?
Prediction-Struve def. Browne via KO in Round 1
Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story-Can Alves make weight? Can Story beat a “name” opponent?
Prediction-Story def. Alves via Unanimous Decision
Brian Stann vs. Jorge Santiago-American Hero vs. Sengoku legend. Winner may land on Anderson Silva’s doorstep provided he defeats Okami this fall.
Prediction-Stann def. Santiago via TKO in Round 3.
Overall this card looks to be solid even without Edgar-Maynard III. A possible of three No. 1 contender bouts could be seen at this event and some good match-making may bring us several Fight-of-the-Night caliber bouts.
