Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum Predictions

The UFC takes a break this weekend to let its sister promotion, Strikeforce, have the spotlight. Come Saturday night in Dallas, the light will shine brightly. In the continuation of the Heavyweight Grand Prix we will see 4 of the top HW’s in the world compete against each other. For me to say I am excited for this would be an understatement, I have been looking forward to this event since February. Not only are the matches worth watching, but in the second major event since the Zuffa purchase, I will be interested to see if any production changes have taken place. Now let’s take a look at what Craig and I feel will happen on Saturday.

Main Event  Heavyweight Grand Prix Quarterfinal: Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum

Who Will Win: Overeem via TKO in Round 1

Why: Overeem is a monster. He can strike, grapple, and submit. He is on a collision course with the top HW’s in the world in the UFC, and Werdum will be an afterthought. I expect Werdum to try to take this one to the ground at the opening bell. We will see Overeem’s fantastic takedown defense and then a barrage of blows that will lead to brutal ground-and-pound and a referee stoppage soon after. Easy win for Alistair.

Craig’s Pick: Werdum

Co-Main Event HW GP Quarterfinal: Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers

Who Will Win: Rogers via TKO in Round 3

Why: No one is picking Brett Rogers in this fight and that’s a mistake. If you remember he had Fedor on the ropes several times and he has tremendous heart. While everyone thinks Barnett will use his experience to win, I feel that Josh thinks he’s already won. Expect a surprise punch to land for Rogers sending Barnett to the mat allowing Brett to GNP his way to victory.

Craig’s Pick: Barnett

K.J. Noons vs. Jorge Masvidal

Who Will Win: Noons via Unanimous Decision

Why: I really like Noons talents and think that he will continue to make noise in MMA  for years to come. His loss to Diaz has only ignited his competitive fire and that will lead to a punishing win over Masvidal. Would love to see Noons/Melendez or Noons/Diaz III in the near future.

Craig’s Pick: Noons

Daniel Cormier vs. Jeff Monson

Who Will Win: Cormier via TKO in Round 3

Why: It’s tough being a high level MMA fighter at age 40 unless your name is Randy Couture and that will be the factor in this fight for Monson. Cormier will test his chin early and often and I don’t see Jeff being able to handle the big blows.

Craig’s Pick: Cormier

Valentijn Overeem vs. Chad Griggs

Who Will Win: Griggs via TKO in Round 2

Why: Overeem has been on a nice little run but that momentum will be stopped by Griggs big fists. Overeem will barely make it out of Round 1 before the ref has to pull Griggs off of him in Round 2. Thinking a replay of the Griggs/Lashley fight here.

Craig’s Pick: Griggs

I expect a great night of fights as we get 4 Heavyweight bouts on the main card and the other fight features the always exciting K.J. Noons. I believe the winner of the Strikeforce Grand Prix will come off this card and Saturday night will produce some highlight reel knockouts. Don’t blink!
