The next inductee into the UFC Hall of Fame should be?

There are currently only 8 members of the UFC Hall of Fame: Royce Gracie, Randy Couture, Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn, Matt Hughes, Mark Coleman, Chuck Liddell, and Charles “Mask” Lewis. While that list may be short, in the overall universe of sports MMA is relatively new. Over the next decade the number in the HOF will triple. But who will be next?

We have seen that it isn’t necessary to be retired, and we have also seen it isn’t a requirement to be a fighter. I can think of a few people that are worthy of this honor(Anderson Silva, GSP, Tito Ortiz, B.J. Penn) but to me only one person needs to be there right now.

That man is Dana White.

Why not? Let’s be honest, if it weren’t for White and the Fertitta brothers there wouldn’t be mainstream MMA. The UFC would have filed for bankruptcy and probably been dissolved shortly after. The sport would’ve still been fighting for sanctioning in Nevada and would be aired on your local public access channels. Whether you like Dana White or not, he is the #1 reason we all exist;every blog, every reporter, every fighter owe a thank you to him.

For the fans who may have only discovered MMA recently let’s give you an idea of where the UFC was just a decade ago. The sport wasn’t sanctioned by the state of Nevada, the ‘Home’ of combat sports. Without sanctioning you won’t have public support and it will be looked at as an illegal activity. After Zuffa bought the UFC in 2001 for $2 million(it’s now worth an estimated $2.5 billion according to White in the fall of 2010) it quickly secured sanctioning and the UFC re-emerged on PPV. Now 10 years later the sport is on the verge of overtaking boxing as the #1 combat sport in the world.

So while we can celebrate the fighters, and we should, it was the vision of White and the Fertittas’ to see what could become of our beloved sport. In my opinion after Royce Gracie was inducted White should’ve been next. There have been few leaders in the sports world who have changed the way we view it forever. Vince Lombardi,  John Wooden, David Stern, and now Dana White are a few of the names that will go down as true legends. It is time to honor the man responsible for it all.
