Hard Hitting Hillbilly

Kevin Croom, a name that is starting to ring bells world-wide as he's always cocked and ready to fight on any given notice, and lately has been building quite the win-streak.

 

I've followed Kevin since very early in his career (old interview); from a rocky start and a series of nick-name changes from "The Cremlin" and "The Alley Cat"; Kevin has finally found his sweet spot at the 135lb division and is now known as the "Hard-Hitting Hillbilly" (or HHH), a name given to him by his boxing coach, Danny Romero and it definitely suits him! Who is Kevin Croom?

Kevin grew up in Columbia, MO with two older sisters (Melissa and Melody). Kevin states throughout his childhood he was a bit of a loner. They lived out in the country and he didn’t have a ton of friends, he was pretty crazy and hyper active (not much has changed, haha); Kevin spent most of his free time playing in the woods by his house, a very similar lifestyle to myself which makes Kevin that much more awesome! He began wrestling in high-school which continued for 3 years. During his final year wrestling, he qualified for state and national tourneys. Although, when I asked Kevin of his favorite child-hood memory, his answer was, "I think my favorite child-hood memory was leaving home (lol)".

 

It's pretty funny, once you learn who Kevin is (quirky, fun-loving, charismatic, and possibly one of the nicest/humble fighters you may ever meet), but he stated that MMA sort of fell into his lap aside from wrestling in high-school; "It started with ninja movies, then pro wrestling, so MMA was just a natural step looking back at it." – Although an odd approach to the natural process of life, this is what led him into his MMA career. Taking his first fight with no formal training, the fact that he was able to legally sign a paper entitling him to fight another human being was enough to convince him this was a great idea. He stated that for his first fight, he was way too excited and not nervous one bit! He knew from the beginning, this is exactly what he wanted to do with his life. His first fight went in his favor, winning by TKO in the first minute – further solidifying his goal to become an MMA fighter… This win was followed by 19 more in a 14-month span; Kevin ended his Amateur career with a perfect 20-0 record before going pro. Upon going pro and losing his first match, he did not let that discourage him and came back to a 4-fight winning streak as he started to gain footing and take on proper training at Jackson MMA and other surrounding facilities. Kevin has, as of lately been spending a lot of his time training at Momma D's Dungeon and training with Chris Luttrell at Lutrell's MMA ; both of which have been keeping Kevin completely on top of his game with a current, outstanding record of 14-4, and a 9 fight win-streak (MMA).

 

When I asked Kevin what the most memorable experience in his career was, he answered, "the next experience, because I don't focus on the past". When asked about his future goals in this sport, he stated he would like to continue in this sport to make a good a living, but still be able to retire early enough that he would still be able to form intelligent thoughts (haha). As a nomad in this sport, fighting for a few large promotions such as Titan and Bellator as well as major overseas names, he aims to eventually reach a contract with the UFC; although he is confused about the current state of the sport (aren't we all?). Right now MMA as a whole stands just about in the middle of a developing sport, it has potential to rise as the greatest combat sport, but also has so many aggressive politics that could eventually be its down-fall. While hoping for the former, Kevin states he wishes this sport would become more professional in the aspect of pay; with all the time he spends training and preparing as well as fighting, he's lucky if all his hard-work equates to even 1-dollar per hour he clocks in. Still hoping for the best, he doesn't foresee any thoughts of his retirement in his near future, he's only 26 years old and has a lot of fight left in him. The Hard-Hitting Hillbilly hopes to achieve greatness, and with the support he has matched with his talent, I do not see any of that being farfetched. 10 years from now, Kevin hopes to have a good amount of money in the bank and live on a beach, which doesn't seem like too much to ask for!

Keep your eyes peeled for a champion on the rise!

Due to a significant injury suffered in training, reigning MFC bantamweight champ Anthony Birchak is unable to fight on Friday, May 9 on the AXS TV Fights card emanating from the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. With Birchak out, “The Hard-Hitting Hillbilly” Kevin Croom (14-4) will now battle Jesse Brock (16-8) in a three-round title eliminator.
